The Training Visa (subclass 407) is a temporary visa that allows applicants to undertake structured workplace-based training in Australia, either from inside or outside the country. What is this visa?

This visa is designed for people who need to:
  • Improve their skills in a specific occupation
  • Undertake practical training in an Australian workplace
  • Strengthen their professional profile through supervised training
Important: This visa allows you to work, but only in activities related to the approved training program. It is not an unrestricted work visa.

How long can you stay?

Up to 2 years, depending on the approved training program. The duration is directly linked to the training plan and the nomination submitted by the sponsor.

Processing times

Times may vary depending on each case:
  • From 4 to 14 months.
  • They depend on the approval of the sponsor, the nomination, the documentation provided, and the assessments conducted by the Department of Home Affairs.

What rights does it grant you?

With this visa, you can:
  • Live in Australia during the training period
  • Work in the approved activities within your training program
  • Receive practical training with an Australian business or organisation
  • Travel to and from Australia while the visa is valid
  • Include your partner and dependent children in the application

Key requirements

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Mandatory sponsorship
  • You must have an approved sponsor in Australia
  • The sponsor must nominate your training program
  • From 11 March 2026, the sponsor and nomination must be approved before the subclass 407 visa application is lodged
2. Approved training programme
  • The program must be structured, specific, and related to the nominated occupation or the applicant's professional field
  • The plan must identify the applicant's current skills and compare them with the expected competencies for their occupation
  • Based on that comparison, it must identify the areas that require improvement or professional development
  • It must explain what activities the applicant will perform, who will supervise them, and how the training will help close those skills gaps
3. Genuine intention
  • You must demonstrate that your main purpose is to undertake temporary training and use that experience to strengthen your professional development when you return to your home country.
4. Personal requirements
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Functional level of English
  • Meet health and character requirements
